Francesco Chiavaioli

 

Francesco Chiavaioli received the MEng degree summa cum laude in 2008 and got the PhD in Information Engineering in 2012 from the University of Siena (Italy) by defending the PhD dissertation entitled “Design, Development and Testing of a Refractometer based on Optical Fiber Gratings: Physical and Biochemical Applications.” He is working as fixed-term Researcher at the Institute of Applied Physics “Nello Carrara” (CNR-IFAC, Florence, Italy) in the design and characterization of optical fiber sensors, especially those based on optical fiber gratings (FBG and LPG), for the detection of physical, chemical and biological parameters. He is also working in the design and characterization of new pH probes based on plastic optical fibers (POFs) to be used in the field of biomedicine. Recently, he starts focusing on the use of LPGs to couple light into whispering gallery mode (WGM) micro-resonators and on both SPR-based and lossy mode resonance (LMR) optical fiber sensors and biosensors. In 2012-2015, he was involved in the Bilateral Project (Joint Research Proposal under CNR, Italy – CSIR, India) entitled “Development of Long Period Grating (LPG) based immunoassay for bio-sensing applications.” In 2015-2016, he spent six months as Visiting Scientist at the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO, Barcelona, Spain) during which he worked in the design and characterization of graphene-based nanocavities and nanostructures. He was awarded by the Publons board, in accordance with the recommandation of the CEO, "the sentinel of Science" as one of the top 10% of researchers contributing to the peer review of the field of Engineering. He is author of more than thirty publications on the subjects in International Journals and in International and National Conference Proceedings. He is member of OSA, EOS and SIOF.
