Francesco Chiavaioli
Francesco Chiavaioli received the MEng degree summa cum laude in 2008 and got the PhD in Information Engineering in 2012 from the University of Siena (Italy) by defending the PhD dissertation entitled “Design, Development and Testing of a Refractometer based on Optical Fiber Gratings: Physical and Biochemical Applications.” From 2013 to 2018, he worked as post-doc and fixed-term researcher at the Institute of Applied Physics “Nello Carrara” of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR-IFAC). His main activity focused on the design and characterization of optical fiber sensors, especially those based on optical fiber gratings (FBG and LPG), for the detection of physical, chemical and biological parameters. In 2012-2015, he was actively involved in the Bilateral Project (Joint Research Proposal under CNR, Italy – CSIR, India) entitled “Development of Long Period Grating (LPG) based immunoassay for bio-sensing applications.” In 2015-2016, he spent six months as visiting scientist at the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO, Barcelona, Spain) during which he worked in the design and characterization of graphene-based nanocavities, optical modulators and nanostructures in general. From December 2018, he is a permanent researcher at CNR-IFAC. He is actively working in several European projects (ERANET Transnational call 2018-2021), with a number of International collaborations. His research activity is focused on:
- fiber-based probes for the detection of bile and pH into the gastroesophageal tract;
- Whispering gallery mode (WGM) micro-resonators;
- Plasmonic optical biosensors;
- Lossy Mode Resonance (LMR) fiber-optic sensors and biosensors;
- Bloch surface wave biosensors;
- Novel configurations of fiber gratings;
- Optical high-performance platforms for the detection of biomolecules;
- Optical systems for neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's disease);
- Novel in-fiber nanostructures.
